Godspeed, Scotty.

‘Star Trek’ Star James Doohan Dies – Yahoo! News

Damn. He was so cute in the recent broadcasts of “Trekkies” on cable, talking about the people who’ve touched his life in the years since “Star Trek” went off the air. I knew about his retirement from public life due to Alzheimer’s, but still today the news made me sad.

It’s simple to find images of James Doohan – just Google “Scotty Trek” and there you are. There are a lot of candids that people have taken at fan events, and there are a lot of screen grabs, TV Guide covers, and promo pictures that have shown up on sites everywhere.

I was trying to find a good one of Scotty cradling his beloved whiskey bottle after drinking the alien Kelvan under the table, and considered the one of him holding a bunch of Tribbles (clearly showing that he was missing the middle finger of his right hand, a souvenir of his WWII service), but this is how I’ll remember Scotty: every now and then, Kirk and Spock took off, leaving him in command of the Enterprise. Note how his right hand is casually out of view behind the armrest.

I got this off of the very funny “Scotty off of Star Trek” page of the Uncyclopedia. He was warned by his dentist that he might as well “go with the flow” regarding being typecast as “Scotty from Star Trek,” and now that’s how he enters posterity.

He was a lovely man, a battle-scarred veteran, and he will be missed.

Shields Holding, Iris Secure

My husband David's been getting a lot of spam emails, and so have I. The trickiness is that we can't just mark the emails "spam" and forget it, because they're spoofed to appear to come from our domain. They're getting stopped, but we need to figure out some filters to refuse them completely.

It's still amusing to continue to get emails from our "staff" telling us our computers are "zombies." In light of the preceding link, does this mean that we're bound to get all medieval on the zombies' decaying asses?

For the first time Blogula had a lot of comment and trackback spam; fortunately the combination of "no spam for you" plugins we're using is working well. That is, when I remember to check the moderation queues. Thus I was mildly shocked to find a couple of hundred fake comments… which were ludicrously easy to filter and delete quickly once I got there. So for now they can all just go "splat" against the titanium iris before they even have a chance of rematerializing on this side of the event horizon.

First Things Last

Everybody has to start somewhere. The fact that the beginning will become the end makes it difficult to start; not sure why. But I need to make sense of things by getting them out there, and "out there" they shall be in more ways than three.

Today's top story: Saddam to appear on the US version of "What Not To Wear." Before and after photos abound, and a disoriented and confused Saddam is told "Never wear a spider hole with that mustache – to balance out the bushiness, hie your heiney into a fully equipped underground missile silo." Tears ensue when Saddam reveals to the diary-camera that he looked "Bushy" in the 360-degree interrogation room.

Note – the British version would install him in a Cabinet War Room instead, with a bathtub and cigar to complete the look. More later. Just a few more days until seeing "Return of the King."
