Dan Brown’s scat-illogical* books are at the top of the Oxfam list of books most likely to be donated to the charity, which runs a chain of 686 second-hand bookshops. But the Top Gear presenter my husband David and I most love to hate is the first non-fiction author to make the Oxfam list of “most donated” books. The rants of Jeremy Clarkson, meanwhile, have made the Top Gear presenter the first non-fiction writer to enter the charity’s top 10 of authors most likely to be donated to its 686 shops: either his readers are notably generous, or unwilling to…

No matter the beauty flaw, there’s a tool to roll it away. Nose too fat? There’s a roller for that. Jowls dangling? Roll them away. Cheeks sagging? Roll them up. Cottage cheese thighs? Roll them bye-bye.

Thank goodness I can get some at the local Japanese supermarket for a variety of dry skin needs!

Of all the many tributes and stories remembering the life and career of Dan Schorr, Scott Simon’s was the one that that moved me most. Schorr wasn’t a teddy bear; he pissed presidents and premiers off, as well as colleagues, columnists, and Congressmen. NPR’s Scott Simon Remembers Daniel Schorr : NPR No other journalist in memory saw as much history as Daniel Schorr. He was born the year before the Russian Revolution and lived to see the Digital Revolution. He was there before the Berlin Wall went up and there a generation later when it came down. He was born…

DAMMIT, I seem to be fresh out of minions. This did not stop us from seeing “Despicable Me” in 3D or D3 or whatever. #fb Steve Carell: Strange Accents And Subtle Departures : NPR We’re halfway through the summer, and Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After have already come and gone. This weekend marks the release of the latest animated kid flick, Despicable Me. It’s about a fellow named Gru — who’s trying very hard to be the world’s biggest bad guy. TV and movie star Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, NBC’s The Office) provided the voiceover for the…

Sang it in church, backing up Father Paul, who played his Pete Seeger-edition banjo. When I started to belt out the rousing alternate harmony line in the chorus, my choir buddies didn’t know what hit ’em because it wasn’t printed in the bulletin. Heh, old folk music fan here, yo. C&L’s Late Night Music Club With Woody Guthrie | Late Nite Music Club Woody Guthrie- This Land Is Your Land We only sang the first three verses, and omitted the rabble-rousing last two. I was ready to go with the lyrics on my iPhone in case Father Paul kept on…

Not that much to see yet, I’ve just installed a new video plugin called “Smart You Tube,” by Vladimir Prelovac, the designer of the WordPress theme I use, Amazing Grace. I need to make a note so that I remember to add the “v” to the URL so that it works correctly. If it DOES work, this will make it a lot easier and more fun to share videos here (especially via the iPhone, as this plugin is supposed to work with them). To use the video in your posts, paste YouTube video URL with httpv:// (notice the ‘v’). Important:…

While my husband David was out of town, I had a chance to get caught up on a few shows that were spooled up in TiVo, ready to watch. One of these was HBO’s Treme, and I had the chance to watch the first three episodes all at once. When I came up for air, I felt like I’d been dunked in the floodwaters and come up a new person. Treme is densely layered, and cultural associations are thrown out offhandedly in practially every line, every scene. What did the comments about the different kinds of music mean? What was…

I’m off for the next couple of weeks, and today I’m out of the house, spending time at Panera while “the ladies” do their twice-monthly thing. It seems the clientele here this time of day is older than I’m used to seeing in the evenings, but there are plenty of people using laptops and taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi. One guy has a small monitor and full-size keyboard set up with a dock; pretty serious gear. No doubt more than a few are unemployed or between jobs. Several are chatting with each other as if they’re regulars. Me, I’m…
