Salt Lake Tribune – Republican prepares bill for demise of Roe v. Wade If someone directly challenges Roe v. Wade . . . And if the U.S. Supreme Court reverses more than 30 years of legal precedent . . . State Rep. Paul Ray wants Utah to be ready. Ray is sponsoring a so-called “trigger law” that would go into effect if the landmark abortion rights case is overturned. House Bill 235 would ban all abortions except in cases of rape, incest or to prevent a womans death or “serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily…

Barbara Boxer should apologize for nothing | TPMCafe How did I find out that Sen. Barbara Boxer is this week's right-wingnut pundit punching bag over her challenge to Condoleeza Rice's Iraq testimony? Because the scrolling underline on FOXNews in the health club yesterday was "BOXER ATTACKS RICE." As TPM notes, Boxer was attempting to imply that neither she nor Secretary Rice had "skin in the game" in the Iraq war, but the Right bloviation machine is trumpeting it as an attack on a noble, accomplished, hard-working "single childless woman." Make no mistake, the same people would be attacking her if…

Made it to the end of the first week in the 6-week “quick start” fitness program more or less in one piece. The way this will work is that I’ll go as much as possible during the work week at the “office” health club, and then hope to hit Bally’s once during the weekend. I still need to get to the health club early enough to allow me a 45 minute workout with a 30 minute shower-and-change, but wasn’t able to carve out that much time as yet. Still, I managed to get 25 minutes at least, 4 times this…

NPR : U.S. Detains 6 Iranians in Irbil Raid Bush's new strategy, however, ignores key recommendations of the Iraq Study Group, which in December called for a new diplomatic offensive and an outreach to Syria and Iran. Instead, the president accused both countries of aiding terrorists and insurgents in Iraq. "We will disrupt the attacks on our forces," Bush said. "We will interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria." Audio of speech plays under sweetened video of the exercise. Meanwhile, video of Syrian government officials making conciliatory statements about a more cooperative relationship with the Americans is being cued up…

Utah is a hard place to be "different." If you're not Mormon, it can be hard to make friends and be accepted, until you find the right religio-social pigeonhole for yourself. And if you were raised Mormon, but can no longer conform for some reason, it's even harder. If your family rejects you, but your partner can't legally marry you, it's much, much worse if you become incapacitated with a fatal illness. Some of this article may be a little hard to read without a box of Kleenex handy. Salt Lake Tribune – Lost to Lou Gehrigs disease: Even…

BBC NEWS | Health | Adult ADHD not treated properly A recent survey of children with ADHD in Newham, in London, found although symptoms tended to decrease between the ages of seven and 17, the 17-year-olds showed a level of hyperactivity similar to that found in a group of normal seven-year-olds. When the same people were seen again at the age of 26, they were found to have disabilities associated with high levels of psychiatric disorder, including feelings of restlessness, feeling depressed when inactive, depression, and difficulties sustaining relationships. Dr Chris Steer, who treats paediatric ADHD in Fife, said that…

Okay, I finally got a reason to get going on a fitness program. The health club in the building at work offered a great deal for a 6 week "jumpstart" program for emplyoyees of my company, including some nutrition counseling and 6 weekly sessions with a personal trainer. So last Friday I signed up for the next 6 weeks, beginning today. And yesterday I went out to Le Tarzhay and bought some new workout gear, all very comfortable and even flattering (cut not so badly for a big girl me). Last night I packed up my gym bag, and this morning made it…

NPR : Judges Tyranny of Tolerance Book Spurs Complaints A veteran St. Louis judge is causing a political stir by publishing a liberal-bashing book. The first chapter of Circuit Judge Robert H. Dierker, Jr.s book, The Tyranny of Tolerance: A Sitting Judge Breaks the Code of Silence to Expose the Liberal Judicial Assault, has been widely read in legal circles, after being distributed by email. When a judge reads a selection from his own book on the air and rants about "the liberal agenda" and throws around words like "femi-fascist," you know it's half-past beer o'clock. Judge Dierker complains that…
