Greasing The Tracks The Wrong Way

Animal fat leak halts Metra trains — chicagotribune.com Commuter rail service on Metra/s Union Pacific West Line has been halted indefinitely at the height of the afternoon rush hour because a stalled freight train is leaking animal fat onto the tracks, Metra officials said Friday afternoon. It’s a sticky situation: high winds and high humidity and high temperatures, plus an unGodly amount of spilled animal fat that’s forced all the roads that cross the tracks in a long section of the Metra West Line to be closed, except for IL-83 and York Road, which cross via underpasses. Also, I-355 and…

Zimbabwe: Mugabe’s Obscene Refusal of Food Aid

Zimbabwe dicator-for-an-indeteriminate-period-of-time Robert Mugabe is in Rome at an international food conference; his presence there has been called “obscene” by the UK and Austrailian delegations, because his “land reform” (ie., crony land-bribes) policies are putting his people in danger of mass starvation. Also, his thugs are in the habit of burning food supplies in areas thought to support the opposition MDC. He has also refused food aid in the past, because he wants total control over food supplies to “opposition” areas. BBC NEWS | Africa | Zimbabwe blocks political aid “Zimbabwe’s government has banned at least one international aid group…

    I Am A Demographic Anomaly

This is one of the top stories of the day: Democrats Agree to Compromise on Delegates : NPR I’ve heard or read dozens of stories in the lead-up to this decision, listened with only passing attention to soundbites, and frankly, I’m tired of being lumped in with the wrong demographic group. I am a white, middle-aged suburban woman. I am a Democrat. I am NOT a Hillary Clinton supporter – in fact, I’ve never liked her, although I gave her grudging props during her husband’s term for trying to get her health policies through a hostile Congress. When she insisted…

    Lincoln Memorial

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should…

HOWTO: set up Gmail to us iPhone for Blogspot

My iPhone Blog: iPhone + Blogger = Visual Twitter Okay, I do something like this already using Flickr as my go-between, but I have a little-used Blogger blog called Razzberry Vinaigrette that is mostly a photo blog. To use this method, I’d have to use a different Gmail account than my current one, as that’s set up with a different IMAP server (our own at Chez Gique). But I’m interested in how blogging via iPhone exclusively might work with a Blogger account. Again, this is because of the anti-Internets thingy during my weekdays…oopsie.

Pizza At the Beginning and End of All Things

This morning when I got to work, I had a notice that one of the hotels where I’ve got a group booked was going to be in the office with treats. After dealing with some morning stuff (why can’t people plan in advance?) I wandered in to the board room where they were set up. MMmmm! Breakfast pizza! That’s nice and fattening and full of calories and sodium! (and it was delicious too). This evening, after futzing around meal-wise, David and I decided to forage in the cupboards and fridge. I had a vague idea I’d heat up some soup. “Oh,…

    The Once and Future Linear

Right, as ***Dave noted, ecto has split into separate Mac and Windows entities, and he and I are following the path of Windows… and an upgrade to a later version was called for. I hope this solves the problemo with the extra spaces being added to the DIVs that rock my drop-shadowed world. So as a test post, this is pretty boring. Let’s see some pictures then.   This is the plaque from the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge. I forgot to add it to yesterday’s post. All of my HTML tags are there, after following the instructions to uninstall ecto and…
