    Playing Catchup

We’ve been home for a week, and our two-week vacation has become a memory. All this week, we’ve been getting up, going to work, coming home, catching up with shows on TiVo, catching up with reading, catching up with Riley. For me, work wasn’t so much catching up as deleting a bunch of unwanted emails and shaking my head over the way a few of my clients seem to think that it’s no big deal to arrange a lot of hotel rooms with only 2 or 3 days’ notice. Unfortunately, my backup had to deal with this as it happened…

NPR : Real Funny Stories from My Crazy City (Part 2)

NPR’s man in Basra sometimes emails the Washington-based news bureau funny details about life in his crazy city along with his stories about bombs, insurgents, and tragedy. His English is wobbly but energetic, and as commentator Corey Flintof notes, the multiple exclamation points are the Iraqi equivalent to “Ba-dum-pum! Laff nao plzzzz!” NPR : Real Funny Stories from My Crazy City (Part 2) Eating chickens against Islamic Sharia (instruction)After 2003, the Islamic instructions (Sharia) spread in bad methods and one of the Fatwas (decrees) was, “it is forbidden to eat imported chickens,” and most of radical extreme muslims believe on…

    The Anglican Identity Movement

It is a most unfortunate turn of phrase: Fort Worth wishes to re-align themselves as something called “Anglican Identity” rather than remaining a part of the Episcopal Church: Episcopal Life Online – DIOCESAN DIGEST [Episcopal News Service] The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth announced October 1 that it will ask its upcoming diocesan convention to “take the first step needed to dissociate itself from the General Convention of The Episcopal Church and to begin the process of affiliating with another Province of the worldwide Anglican Communion.” Really, if they’d be happier elsewhere, and if they have…

    White House Distressed by Detentions

UPDATE:On re-rereading this I realized that I came off like a churlish jerky girl with regards to the people of Burma and the heroic monks who are marching (and dying) for them and for a more democratic form of government. That wasn’t my intent. I’ve been moved by the photos people have posted on Flickr, in support of peace and justice in Burma, that have been showing up on my Google Flickr thingy. So I thought I’d better make things better. I happened to scan the recent White House press briefing, following up on something completely different noted by OneUtah:…

    Aloha Maui. Vacation Pau.

The second week of our vacation, we got pretty busy with going out to dinner and making like tourists, and after David’s parents and Debbie left on the 27th, David and I kind of slowed down completely and relaxed. Thursday, after they left on their respective flights, we completely bummed out for the day at the condo, as it was overcast and very windy. We barbecued chicken that night on the rooftop deck that we’d bought at the natural foods grocery store across the street, trying to use up some of the massive amount of groceries we still had. Friday,…

    House of Bishops Discussion

The Lead Resolution B033 of the 2006 General Convention The House of Bishops concurs with Resolution EC011 of the Executive Council. This Resolution commends the Report of the Communion Sub-Group of the Joint Standing Committee of the Anglican Consultative Council and the Primates of the Anglican Communion as an accurate evaluation of Resolution B033 of the 2006 General Convention, calling upon bishops with jurisdiction and Standing Committees “to exercise restraint by not consenting to the consecration of any candidate to the episcopate whose manner of life presents a challenge to the wider church and will lead to further strains on…

    Fiftysomething!

Monday, September 24th was the 50th anniversary of my debut on this planet. I started this post but ran out of time to finish it on “the day,” and we’ve been busy every day since then. Things are starting to slow down again as we near the end of our stay. It’s really the point of this trip, but when I first started talking about it, Mom was still with us, and I visualized the whole thing with “hope Mom is feeling up to air travel then” as she’d had some problems following her last few trips. So she’s not…

Bush on education: ‘childrens do learn’

The Swamp: Cleaning up after Bush: It was ‘childrens do learn’ Yes, he said it. The original transcript “cleaned up” after Bush’s grammatical error – a stenographer silently corrected the gaffe. Then the howls of protest forced the White House to say that the “correction” was done in error, and the errant “s” would go back in the official transcript. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress are trying to hold up health care for uninsured childrens, while Bush will be battling for billion$ to fund both wars.  Apparently, even though childrens do get sick, they must first be protect from the terrorist.…

    Today is… Friday?

We got everybody gathered and settled yesterday, and had a great meal together for “lunch,” and then we three women went off to the grocery store and spent too much on food and snacks. Ate a “snack dinner” last night and then as eyes were drooping, wrapped up and everyone went to bed in our respective condos. Getting everyone at the airport worked out well, as David’s parents and my friend Debbie arrived within half an hour of each other. We were so bushed from the previous day’s kayaking and capsizing adventure that we’d taken it easy yesterday morning, and…
