Why vote Republican, when items like this pop up: BBC NEWS | Business | US consumer confidence plummets Confidence among US consumers has fallen to a 16-year low, as fears grow about recession and job cuts, a closely-watched survey has found. That’s right, since 1991… during the waning days of Bush 41. Coincidence? Maybe not.

Sometimes I read the letters to the editor to the Salt Lake Tribune and feel like jeering. Occasionally, I read the letters and feel like cheering. Today, I feel like wearing balloons and a party hat and waving flags, because an “old Mormon bishop” wrote a righteous, inspiring letter. Now this really rare for me, approving of the opinions of LDS bishops, and I wanted to save the whole letter because they go off the SL Trib website so fast. It’s to do with that idiot Buttars, of course: I cannot pick up my copy of The Tribune on any morning and not read how our…

My mother-in-law called earlier asking about something suspicious that popped up on her screen. Actually, I think it was just a warning from some anti-spyware stuff that my dad-in-law probably installed on her computer, but still I laughed when I saw this just now. moar funny pictures [tags]LOLcats, ICanHasCheezburger, spyware, uhasit[/tags]

State Sen. Chris Butters, R-SomeBraindeadConstituency, UT, has said some stupid things before, but this takes the cake: Salt Lake Tribune – Buttars’ racial slur leads to rebuke, apology It’s a good thing Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, isn’t running for president of the United States. He had a macaca moment on the Senate floor Tuesday afternoon.”This baby is black It’s a dark ugly thing,” Buttars remarked during vigorous debate about SB48, legislation aimed at equalizing school capital outlay funding when school districts split. Buttars’ blunder outlasted debate on the bill. After senators returned from a 10-minute break, Senate President John…

One of the blessings of a “mixed” family heritage is that you get to eat comfort foods from more than one buffet line. Case in point: yesterday’s family confab and lunch nosh, which was held at Max’s Delicatessen in Skokie. I knew going in that on a bitterly cold day, fighting a “bug” and trying not to cough too much, I needed lots of chicken soup, STAT. Probably with kreplach (dumplings) or matzoh balls (actually, one ginormous matzoh ball). But I’d never seen anything like the menu item under the various listings for chicken soup extras – underneath all of…

US gov wants data on Europe air passengers – Boing Boing The US government is pressuring 27 European Union nations to agree on new transatlantic air travel security measures which include armed guards on all flights from Europe to America operated by US airlines. Wait, why weren’t we doing this in the period immediately following 9/11, when we became a nation of bug-eyed fraidy cats willing to hand over the Bill of Rights to the nice strong people in charge if only they would keep us safe from Osama the Boogie Man? I admit that on September 15, approximately when…

Okay, the new template is set up more or less how I want it… the center column is about 25px too narrow to accomodate the larger images I’ve favored recently, the sidebars will have to be moved farther to the sides to allow for this, and the font is pretty small and needs to be a bit larger. But I’m happy with the result for now. The funny thing about WordPress’s much vaunted flexibility and “one click template change” setup is it’s a bit techy getting the new templates downloaded into the right directory to begin with, and each template…

Needed some spacing and line break tweaks to avoid invoking the Smiley of Head-Shaking Disbelief. Oh, and that reminds me, I should think about re-applying clickable smileys again. One quirk of iTunes and ecto and WMPtunelog now is that I have to stop and restart the music to get multiple music citations in the same post. I am one fierce tweaking twiddling diva. I am not yet worthy to be a Liberal Peace-Mongering Ninja, however. I was invited to take part in the event, but had that urgent family nosh event to attend. Now listening: ♫ KT Tunstall:Suddenly I See:…

One more tweak to the media template in ecto: need to use an entity for the ampersand in my character entity for tied eighth notes! And an ampersand, not a percent! Then click “APPLY.” Now listening:♫ The Police:Can’t Stand Losing You:Outlandos d’Amour (Remastered)[2:58] Technorati Tags: iTunes
