    Bookses Good and Middling

The Sunday Philosophy Club : An Isabel Dalhousie MysteryBy: Alexander McCall Smith Finished this one a few days ago. I had really loved the “Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency” novels by the same author, and I hope to encounter a new favorite series with this one. That wasn’t the case, but I did enjoy meeting Isabel Dalhousie and seeing a bit of her world. She’s a very deep person who spends a lot of time thinking about things philosophical, romantic, and mysterious. Ultimately it’s an unsatisfactory read, because philosophy gets in the way of logic. In the real world, a…

Shark In Sight, Ramp May Still Be Avoided

You may disagree, but the current storyline at PVP sure looks like a classic shark-jumper. In a nutshell, Brent is dreaming about a possible future, because Jade thinks she might be pregnant. I’m hoping it’ll turn out to be a false alarm, with some plotty goodness that makes it all just a scary side-issue. But it may well be the next direction for this strip, because quite often strips follow a kind of life of their own that may more or less mirror their creators’ lives. Which means that the classic dictum “write what you know” works just as well…

    The Disillusionment of Alton Brown

If you were thinking about sending a picture of your open refrigerator to Alton Brown, don’t bother: Thursday, October 20, 2005 Some of you may have noticed that the “contact” button is gone from my web site and that my rant calling for refrigerator pics is gone. Here’s why: although many of you sent in some really nice pics and insightful, fun emails some of you decided to send vulgar, nasty, frightening messages and images. I always knew there was ugliness and meanness out there but you know what, I don’t have to give you a place to put it.…

    Prelude to a Disaster

The current season of TAR continues to eerily predict impending disasters, like Katrina or the cancellation of a once-great show. This week, teams wandered around the Southeast avoiding Hurricane Dennis while finding random bits of giant furniture and spending the night in a trailer park. Wow, love the cultural immersion they’re undergoing! Not. There was one awesome shot of a curtain of rain and stormcloud behind the Paolos, who at least stopped for a second to look at it. Before the episode, there was a disclaimer about how the episode was filmed before Katrina and Rita laid waste to the…

    The Good Bishop

That’s all Gene Robinson wants to be known for being: the good bishop, and not just the gay bishop. According to the article, the Diocese of New Hampshire is doing very well, with most parishes reporting modest growth, especially from young families. And there’s been a surge of applications for clergy positions in the diocese. Most are not gay, but think New Hampshire is the place for them to begin their journey.

The Not So Amazing Race: Spaceballs!

I already knew where this episode was supposedly headed; spoilers had been floating around since the day they filmed at today’s location, because it’s been just about impossible to keep people from all over the country from saying “Hey! I think they filmed an episode of TAR in my area! I saw Racers/clue boxes/flags/production crew.” The spoilers are showing up in news articles and TV Guide-type websites, too, so I’m not feeling too much doubt about where we’re going. Of course, if we go somewhere else, I’m not the only one with egg on my face. Apparently, tonight we’re going…

    Fun With George

Discovered with relish and and an extra helping of schadenfraude at Clack: Man, falling approvals in the polls really suck! I’ve seen these “falling figure” animations before, but this one made me laugh – every now and then, George gets stuck. You can use the mouse pointer to drag him between spheres and set him on his downward course again, or you can just drag him every which-a-way on the winds of change or public opinion polls or whatever. But when he gets stuck, it’s often in some anatomically impossible and rather disturbing position, and if you don’t drag him…

    I’m A Calvinist Too

‘Calvin and Hobbes’ Creator Finally ‘Speaks’ — in Book Intro The Complete Calvin and HobbesBy: Bill Watterson A new Calvin and Hobbes book? I’d better let AKMA know about this. But, oh my GOD, it’s almost $95 dollars. Yes, it’s all the strips and Sunday panels and everything. But that’s a lot… yet we’re talking about Calvin and Hobbes here. Damn. I already own 3 Calvin and Hobbes paperbacks that I occasionally crack open. I loves me some C&H (if you recall, an early graphic I used here was of Hobbes “blogging.” Well, damn. It’s kind of hard to justify…

    TAR In My Stats Page

I’ve been noticing for a while that various incarnations of Amazing Race drive readers to this blog – they search on team names, catch phrases, and occasionally on very odd but unique characteristics. Some of which are a little obscure, unless you’re as obsessed with this show as I am.
