    Pleasant Surprise: Visiting MTG’s District

    October 24, 2024 - By ginny

There are nice, thoughtful, diverse people who live in Marjorie Taylor Greene’s district. A brown-skinned immigrant with a foreign accent talked to them about everything except politics and was rewarded with interesting conversations. He was initially apprehensive, but found only friendly locals. It sounds like someone needs to give them an alternative to MTG in two years.  Gift Link: Washington Post “Brown Immigrant Visits MTG’s District”

#VoteHope North Carolina sets record for first day of voting with more than 350,000 ballots

    October 19, 2024 - By ginny

This gives me hope. People are literally crawling over broken glass, and the mess left by Helene, to vote in North Carolina.   “Haven’t stood in a line like this to vote since Obama 2008,” blogger Tom Sullivan posted on X, photographing dozens lined up out the doors of one Asheville polling place. You BET We’re Better Off!

    October 19, 2024 - By ginny

Four years ago, an incompetent braggart screwed up the scientific, public health based response to COVID-19. The world economy was at a standstill. I was furloughed, spouse was job-hunting, we stayed home and hoped like hell things would improve after the election. They did, but not until 12:01pm, January 20, 2021. www.theguardian.com/business/2024/oct/18/us-voters-economy-inflation-growth-presidential-election

Analysis | When a top Republican says Russian propaganda has infected the GOP

    April 19, 2024 - By ginny

The infection could be called the Helsinki Virus, but it probably started long before that. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul is the latest to point out the problem in his party.   …In an interview with Puck News’s Julia Ioffe, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex.) — none other than the GOP chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — flat-out said that Russian propaganda had “infected a good chunk of my party’s base.” McCaul suggested conservative media was to blame. “There are some more nighttime entertainment shows that seem to spin, like, I see the Russian propaganda in some…

  • Insurance season is almost over, thank Dog

Avoid health sharing plans, they're not that great a deal. A friend had one while getting some pretty serious treatment, and he struggled to get the care he needed.

Elisabeth Yoder and her son Darragh recently experienced a huge gap in their health care "coverage." They stand in front of the family home, and they belong to a Christian "health sharing" plan that didn't reimburse for a recent ambulance ride.

  • Charm Patch Quilt: On Point

From Sew Can She - this looks like a great way to use up charm squares and scraps that can be at least 4 1/2-5 inches square. The contrast fabric and on-point arrangement add good visual interest without being too busy.

  • Tea Towel Hems

Bought some tea towels for gifts, looking for tutorials for adding colorful hanging cuffs after hemming.

I lean toward Method 1, mitred corners. Will decide once the towels arrive in case the selvage edges are good quality.

  • Sorry About The Mess: Trump Wrecking World Economy

Post: He’s nuts if he thinks manufacturers will move to the US; they like paying rock bottom non-union wages and they’ll pass the higher costs to American consumers. Lose-lose! What can possibly go wrong?

Since he lives in his own bubble universe, I’m wondering how long his big donors, the few relatively sane conservatives in Congress, and his “IKEA cabinet” will hold out until the murmurs behind the scenes become screaming fights in the Oval Office.

Spine of steel? Nope. Skull of rock.

Maury Povich lie detector meme: It says here… Trump is as dumb as a box of rocks.

Global economy rocked again as rates on imports to the US from dozens of trading partners rose further, with China hit by 104% tariffs

  • Now Listening: Joni Mitchell | Black Crow

Joni Mitchell album cover Black Crow. A woman is superimposed over an empty road that leads into her silhouette.

    Text:

”Black Crow - There's a crow flying Black and ragged Tree to tree He's black as the highway that's leading me Now he's diving down To pick up on something shiny I feel like that black crow Flying In a blue sky I took the ferry to the highway Then I drove to a pontoon plane I took a plane to a taxi And a taxi to a train I've been traveling so long How'm I ever gonna know my home When I see it again I'm like a black crow flying In a blue blue sky In search of love and music My whole life has been Illumination Corruption And diving diving diving diving Diving down to pick up on every shiny thing Just like that black crow flying In a blue sky I looked at the morning After being up all night I looked at my haggard face in the bathroom light I looked out the window And I I saw that ragged soul take flight I saw a back crow flying In a blue sky Oh I'm like a black crow flying In a blue sky”
