    Gus Openshaw’s Whale-Killing Journal

As the publication date of Gus Openshaw’s Whale-Killing Journal gets nearer, I’m looking forward to receiving my copy. In a weird sort of way, I was involved in the development of this book from a wacky serial published in a blog to an actual hardback with paper and everything. You might say I was vicariously picaresque at the time the whale-killing journal was being posted. Of course, Mrs. Blubridge was really the instigator, I was just along for the ride. Don’t tell her this, but between you and me, she’s pretty… wacky, but she means well. Currently, Gus is a…

Terrocracies and Commocracies and Clownocracies, Oh My!

Comedian and crackerjack political commentator Adam Felber sets the record straight: Fanatical Apathy – Corrections Dictatorships shelter terrorists, and feed resentment and radicalism, and seek weapons of mass destruction. Democracies replace resentment with hope, respect the rights of their citizens and their neighbors, and join the fight against terror. The President meant that democracies that do not elect terrorists will join the fight against terror. Those other nations are actually “terrocracies,” and shouldn’t be confused with actual “democracies.” This is also true of so-called democracies who elect dictators, which are actually “dictocracies,” or so-called democracies who elect communists (”commocracies”), anti-American…

In Which I Gently Correct Dorothea

Caveat Lector ? Dramarama I am in contact with New Librarian’s parents, who are afraid to lay the appropriate smackdown because New Librarian “shuts down” when they try, since she “is threatened by them” and (eye-rolling alert, folks) “her self-esteem is shattered.” I shall endeavor to convince them that some tough love is in order. You spelled “uhhsteeem” wrong. 😉 But good luck with setting them straight. It sounds like you’ll need it. As you explained, the apple didn’t fall far from that tree.

State of the Union Drinking Game 2006

Adam Felber’s got a new and improved State of the Union Drinking Game: Fanatical Apathy – The 2006 State of the Union Drinking Game The State of the Union Drinking Game (2006 edition) (enhanced!) First of all, make sure everyone has a few pieces of scrap paper in front of them. These pieces of paper are called “The Fourth Amendment” and will be used during the game. Also, make sure that there is one fluffy and not-too-large pillow handy. Your Host begins with the pillow in his or her lap. This is the Crisis Pillow. The Rules – Whenever the…

    Tokyo Stormtrooper

Oh, my GOD, this is good geekery: Click on the photo for a full-size, gloriously detailed image. Check out Danny Choo’s website for the hilarious commentary (also much other anime/action figure weirdness). Danny likes to go out on various errands, fully armored and ready to put down the odd rebellion, perform traffic stops looking for ‘droids, or ride the train to Yokohama. The title of this particular set: “Densha Trooper.” I think that means something like “Railway Trooper.” Oh, Annie might need to see this. Via Boing Boing

    My Current Obsessions

David Hewlett: almost as surprisingly sexy as Mitch Pileggi. Also, strangely hot. Yes, I'm obsessed with David Hewlett, who plays McKay. Apparently, he's making an indie film with some of the other cast and crew of both shows, called "A Dog's Breakfast." He's been making films since he was a kid, so it may be worth a look if/when it ever gets a distribution deal. Still, I'm not that much of a freak for Hewlett: at least I didn't create a fanlisting for his hands, although I totally concur with the one for Joe Flanigan's hair, "Intergalactic Bedhead." Actually, Atlantis…

    Map Fun

A few days ago, I listened to an interesting piece on National Public Radio about “Google mashups” – fun projects that combine Google’s mapping technology with feeds or GPS data or something completely off-the-wall. One of the examples given was dartmaps – the Dublin Area Rapid Transit systems live-time system maps. Annie from Going Underground has recently been riding the DART, so I thought she’d get a kick out of this. They’re useful, and cute, too – all Thomas the Tank Engine and not at all what you’d expect from a regional transit outfit. Due to the time difference, I…

Hotlinkers: Busted! No More Bandwdth Theft For You!

Bandwidth thievery is pretty rampant. I only noticed recently that up to 69% of my bandwidth is being taken by leeches who’ve hotlinked to images here (moblog pictures, stuff I found elsewhere and uploaded to my server, and so on) and used them on their little free blogs. Well, the remedy for this is some .htaccess magic. David’s taking care of that. What really ticked me off was one girl took this image and turned it into her page’s background. Which, of course, is very lame on so many levels. And also, the image looked like CRAP because it was…

The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster By: Bobby Henderson Just when you thought your edumication was complete, the next wave in scientifical theories of the creation of everything is about to break over our heads. And in this theory, All was created from Nothing from the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Hey, it makes as much sense as intelligent design theory, and it’s perfect with a nice Chianti and a bit of aged parmesan. Coming soon is the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and sometime after that, a pirate ship whose missionary work will be to go out amongst the…
