I had to go to our other location today and try to swap out one of our brand new Windows XP computers for a somewhat older computer at the “onsite.” This project was laid upon me late yesterday, and I was told to go out today after lunch. Turns out that the lady at the onsite would really, really have preferred I come out in the morning, and I was missing half the technical info I needed, and had to call the “hardware” help desk twice, and learned way, way more about how SABRE sets connect together (physically putting the…

Just in case my sister needs ideas for next Christmas: she’s one of those people that starts shopping in January. I’ll have to decline the kind offer from the same site for their Bobblehead Jesus page linked to the Holy Moly site, though. I don’t think Father Ted would go for it. Happy Blogoversary To Me (and Rance) I got a couple of emails this week reminding me that Rance first started blogging about this time last year. As it happens, so did I, about 2 weeks earlier. And what with the holidays and shopping and screwing around last week…

It's that most wonderful time of the year, the season of Xcess! And it's not quite over, as after a successful morning's buffet breakfast and an afternoon of lying around contentedly with full tummies, we headed to the home of nearby friends for a Solstice party of eating, geeking out, and comparing holiday horror stories. It was a really lovely meal, with an actual Christmas goose, served with "goose juice" (Cumberland sauce) instead of gravy and lots of delicious side dishes. Also, there was a flirtatious kitty to wheedle, and wacky Xcess holiday tunes. The day ended on a fun,…

Ow. For some reason my neck really hurts today. Probably too much time spent unched over, reading webpages. Also, it starts hurting if I try to use my cell phone for a lot of texting, wich is not good because it locked up and had to be swapped out for a new one. Thank goodness for warrantees; but unthank badness for not being able to pull all my phone numbers and snippets of quick text over from old to new. I’ve been working on vacation stuff at last. Should have booked the accomodations back in February when I yapped about…

“I uncovered information that now leads me to question the immigration status of a person who had been in my employ as a housekeeper and nanny,” Mr Kerik said in a statement. “It has also been brought to my attention that for a period of time, during such employment, required tax payments and related filings had not been made.” Masterful use of the passive voice and other linguistic tricks to distance yourself from the issue there, Mr. Kerik. By the way, has anyone ever counted how many nominees of either party have scuppered themselves by employing illegal immigrants and paying…

It was cold the other night, we built a fire. Note to self: the damper is open if the handle is pointing TOWARD the window.

Originally found at Learning Moveable Type, revisited via ***DDtB: Portrait Illustration Maker – Let’s make an original icon!! I actually find this “self-image” slightly disturbing, so I added the headset and optional cat to make it less so. It must be the “uncanny valley” thing people were talking about when comparing photo-realist “The Polar Express” to shiny-fantastic “The Incredibles.” As previously mentioned around here somewhere, it’s possible to set a gravatar that shows up when you comment on blogs that have enabled this feature. Choosing the “face” shown on the Internets is tricky – should one go with reality, or…

WASHINGTON — Liberal powerhouse MoveOn has a message for the “professional election losers” who run the Democratic Party: “We bought it, we own it, we’re going to take it back.” A scathing e-mail from the head of MoveOn’s political action committee to the group’s supporters yesterday targets outgoing Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe as a tool of corporate donors who alienated both traditional and progressive Democrats. “For years, the party has been led by elite Washington insiders who are closer to corporate lobbyists than they are to the Democratic base,” said the e-mail from MoveOn PAC’s Eli Pariser. “But…

“Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to uparmour our vehicles?” Army Spc Thomas Wilson asked. Why, indeed? Good for you, Army Spc Wilson.

The Big House O’ Inflatables is slowly ramping up the holiday spirit – it’s hard to tell here but there are “only 6” inflatables thus far. The trend in the neighborhood (oy, an inflatables trend) this year is for bigger, multiple-unit tableaux (such as Santa/sleigh/Rudolph or a snowperson family unit). Also, the BHOI is using lower-wattage bulbs than they have in the past, so there’s not as much light (thus cutting down on the garishness factor). Mornings in Burbclavia are very tawdry – all the white-plastic deer and spiral Xmess trees look cheap and nasty, and the inflatables get turned…
