    Good News from Falls Church

There are several “hot spots” in the Episcopal world, where churches or entire dioceses have already split away, or are working towards splitting away. One such is Falls Church, VA, site of one of the oldest and most wealthy Episcopal churches in the country, which became very conservative over the last few decades. Recently, they aligned with the Diocese of Nigeria, overseen by Bp. Akinola. But a significant fraction of the church did not go with them – although they didn’t have control of the property, so they began meeting nearby. The former Falls Church, now a CANA church, is…

    Blathering

It’s been a relaxing and productive week so far – there are plenty of things that I’m procrastinating about (Christmas tree, decorations, clearing the dining room table off) but there are plenty of things I’ve got done. It’s been a vacation week for me, and I’ve spent it making tea, reading books, reorganizing things, keeping up with online news and blogs, listening to NPR, shopping for the few items I have to get for Xmess each year. Right now, I’ve got a turkey breast in the oven in the big roasting pan, and when we pull it out, we’re making…

May The Incredibly Bad Farce Be With You

Thanks to Joey de Villa, I’ve now seen approximately 2.5 minutes of the 5 minute version of the 2-hour Star Wars Holiday Special in all its mercifully shortened craptabulousness. May God bless whoever edited the original special down to 5 minutes. Even so, I had to watch Art Carney rock out to the Jefferson Starship as he stood in Chewbacca’s family home, which was being searched at the time by 2 Stormtroopers, a black-helmeted Imperial Guard, and a rather stuffy officer-type with a fake British accent. I mean…Art Carney…rocking out…while dressed in a really crappy “Star Wars-y” costume.  Norton, the…

    Man The Lifeboats

Episcopal Life Online – NEWS Bishop-Pope Duncan emerges as the leader of a very mixed bag of Anglican nut fudge. One of the new allied leaders apparently didn’t get the memo about always speaking as if from a position of strength; he speaks of being “in a lifeboat” situation and hoping to find a broad enough church to overcome their many and various differences of opinions. Um.

Boltin’ Joe is such an ass.

Hasn’t he figured it out yet? He’s aligned himself with the biggest loser in the party of losers. His timing is masterful: he’ll find himself even more in the minority than he is now, with his “party of one” position. VOA News – Former Democrat Lieberman Endorses Republican McCain for President

    The Southwark Pilgrimage

Some days ago several Anglican wagses Went on a pub crawl, for to maken pilgimages To memorialize the Good Bishop of Southwark, Who once one Yule made merry, very merry, ‘thout shirk. And they wore costumes, and took pictures, and stopped traffic. Based on a real incident, with a real bishop, and a real Mercedes full of Christmas toys, and an (unbaptized) bear named Teddy. It’s all highly amusing, at least if your college career included an intensive study of Chaucer in the original Middle English, and you’ve since become a high-church Episcopalian. I’m left with just one niggling question:…

    Dana Perino’s Hard Week

I’m listening to Wait, Wait! Don’t Tell Me!, and their celebrity guest is Dana Perino, the White House press secretary. They’ve made her laugh and feel more comfortable, as they know she’s had a tough week. First, her boss was unwavering in his position, even when it was eroding out from under him like the sands of time at high tide. Someone told him last summer they had “news for him” regarding Iran, and he accepted the news that there was news with gravity, but didn’t actually inquire as to what the new news was. Because he’s not that kind…

    Moar Katchup, PLZ!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at Chez Gique. We’re having a cozy night “in” with the fire going, as it’s a cold, blustraceous, snowy day. And later when the fire’s out, we now have a cover for the opening to keep the draft out and the heat in that David made. Eventually, we’ll make it look like more than a sheet of plywood with a handle on it, but it’ll do. Last night we went to the holiday party for David’s company – a really nice time. It was held at Cantigny Golf and Tennis Club, with…

    Things To Be Thankful For

I am thankful that so far, the administration of this country hasn’t found a way to blame the following on a Congress that won’t hand him their war budget on a silver platter: kdka.com – Military Asks Wounded Soldiers To Return Portions Of Signing Bonuses PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The U.S. Military is demanding that thousands of wounded service personnel give back signing bonuses because they are unable to serve out their commitments. To get people to sign up, the military gives enlistment bonuses up to $30,000 in some cases. Now men and women who have lost arms, legs, eyesight, hearing…
