So here's what's going on this week around here: Busy at work, but not as crazed as last week. Thinking about sick friends and considering how best to help Keeping only half an eye on the news Fooling around with iPod more (David got me a dock!) Putting off on uploading more photos to Flickr Getting ready to travel again Real Soon (just a weekender) Realizing that there's not a lot of time left Playing catch-up in nearly every area of my life Now that the Weekend of Crazed Running Around is over, I can finally say something about what…

Near-Arctic Readiness Force of the Domination of Eiler I see that the Dominator has added to the Dominion of Eiler, and that He has graciously included a photo credit. Click on the link, scroll all the way down, and there’s the NARF-Cycle in the winter picture wot I took last year. There it is parked in all its arctic glory on the pile of snow plowed up in front of Holy Moly’s handicapped parking sign. The Dominator bypasses man’s restrictions by parking anywhere He damn well pleases. Coincidentally, the Dominator is also the Ineffable Bass. (stats pages is fun reading…

Drew’s Blog-O-Rama: The Movie Blog That Other Movie Blogs Beat Up After School roars back from the undead with some hot, fresh snark on various topics. Thank God for Bloglines or I might have missed it. One interesting question raised: is Russell Crowe’s new movie tanking because people are boycotting it, or because it sucks? This seems like a good excuse to screw around with Blogpolling again. Watch for a new poll later today. I remember seeing a “quirky” news item last week where movie theaters were offering a money-back guarantee to filmgoers who see Cinderella Man and don’t come…

Ah, Memorial Day memories from ginmar’s new neighborhood…she regrets no longer being able to fire warning shots at obnoxious people. Includes this observation: When I got back to my house, my day was copleted by finding that despite the parking spots on the street, somebody had seen fit to park in my spot next to my garage pad. Before I could call the cops, she arrived and I started to wonder: Is tackiness a sign of character flaws? I took one glance before her outfit burned my retinas, but I wondered if I was eyeing, say, the future of Scarlett…

Almost done with Gus’ thinly veiled autobiography, Pirates of Pensacola. It’s a good fun read, and every now and then I run across a little detail that I know is re-worked from Gus’ recent adventures chasing a certain blubbery bastard across the lower Caribbean. However, the work stands on its own merit. Anyone with a little pirate in them will enjoy this book. While goofing around reading Nelson’s blarg and wondering where in the world Stupid George has gotten to, I ran across this interesting BlogPulse page for “Pirates of Pensacola.” Most of the entries are from other shipmates’ blogs,…

Bill Murray: Father Guido Sarducci was among the two hundred and forty traveling press people who covered the Pope’s United States tour. I bet it was quite a thrill. How did it go, Father? [Cheers and applause as we pan over to the gentle, cigarette smoking, Italian-accented Father Guido Sarducci, gossip columnist for the Vatican newspaper.] Father Guido Sarducci: It was. It was a real thrill, Bill. It was just terrific. But now I’m a little down. I have what my psychiatrist calls “post-papal depression.” … Was such a high, you know, bein’ on that tour and now it’s over.…

Here is a brilliantly insightful analysis of the past two weeks’ worth of breaking, world-shaking news; I can’t bear to cut a single word: TERRI SCHIAVO IS DYING! HER TUBE’S BEEN REMOVED, FOR GODSSAKES! THE SCHINDLERS ARE UPSET! HERE THEY ARE, BEING UPSET! MORE ON THAT IN A MINUTE! ALSO, WHAT’S UP WITH THAT MICHAEL SCHIAVO? WHY DOES HE WANT HER TO DIE!!!?? the US military killed a couple dozen of its prisoners in Iraq, by the way, and – OHMYGOD – MICHAEL JACKSON’S WEARING PAJAMAS!! THE MAN’S WEARING PAJAMAS TO COURT! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD SUCH A THING? WHAT…

I’ve been getting a number of hits all year on an entry from our Britain trip that tells about visiting Westminster Abbey in London and about the tombs and monuments of various royals, literary figures, and scientists that are found there. In short, I was getting a hell of a lot of hits on the phrase “Isaac Newton Tomb” – famous scientist and historical honorary member of the Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists. An online chum who claims to be a dead mathematician and philosopher would also qualify if someone would only nominate him. Don’t be fooled by the…

Mena dismisses the skepticism as misguided, insisting a blog doesn’t have to be profound to be worthwhile. She believes most blogs are simply a convenient way to keep in touch with a small circle of family and friends, even if the content seems inconsequential. You know it’s a cultural phenomenon when the Daily Harold (spelling intentional) finally gets around to covering it. The story mentions the people that got Six Apart‘s Moveable Type started as a blogware giant, such as Joi Ito. My blog? Inconsequential. But I have fun with it.

ginmar has posted a few more pictures noting the last convoy her unit had to take, some details of her last couple of days at her old post in Iraq, and photos of things seen along the way on her unit’s last trip through Baghdad. She’s noted on her LJ that the party when she gets home will be epic in scope. Some of the images are striking; she’s got quite an eye for the telling detail. I especially liked this one, with the rosary caught in mid-swing. I sharpened the lettering slightly to make it clearer. Do not get…
