It really was a swell bash and a lovely party, and lots of friends and family came to my sister Timmy’s house to help Mom celebrate her 90th birthday, which we celebrated last Saturday. There was lots of great food, and clearly shown in this picture, plenty of drink (well, boxes of wine are kind of an inside joke in the family). I’ve uploaded all the photos (even the action-shotty ones) as a set on my Flickr page. There was even a fun game to play – some sort of “ring on a string” thing where a metal ring was…

The family cabin up Lamb’s Canyon in Utah was in use when we drove up for a look around last weekend; I was happy to see that almost everything is still maintained in the traditional way. That is, aside from the modern abominations of electricity (EE-LECK-TRICITAH!). One of my younger cousins had some guests “up” with her so we walked around, took photos, then drove back down. The pictures may not look like much, but that’s because the memories that crowd into the corners (along with the friendly ghosts) are not so easily digitized. The horseshoes hang on the wall…

Just a bit of background: we’re traveling, hanging out, and helping my little mommy celebrate the big 9-0. We had a blast today at the party, but I started the day feeling a bit… rocky. As this is likely to be a really gross and offensive post in which graphic descriptions of alarums and excursions in one’s personal innards play a major part, the following disclaimer is offered as a public service. If you have delicate sensibilities and a weak stomach for yucky detail, perhaps this picture of nice bunnies and kitties from Hulk’s Diary will please you. If you…

Tiny chemical differences in how our skin reacts to ultraviolet light could explain why redheads are more likely to suffer skin cancer, say US scientists. The answer lies in the skin and hair pigment melanin, the team from Duke University, North Carolina, believe. People with ginger hair have pigment that is chemically different from that of people with darker hair, they found. This difference might explain why people with red hair burn easily and are prone to sun damage. 🙄 I know, I know, I know. But the science is interesting.

Time to head out and spend some quality time at Jiffy Lube… 🙄 Dammit, I wish I’d brought iTunes with me.

This guy documented all of his bad-weather survival gear. For pure entertainment value: a potato cannon. Click the picture to view the notes within Flickr. Come to think of it, the potato cannon may come in handy as a defensive weapon. This image was sent from Flickr as a blog entry, email or cameraphone image. The concert was awesome. This picture can’t really do them justice, especially with the bad backlighting, so I’m hoping that David’s pictures came out better with the good camera. This time in addition to their usual sort of repertoire, they played one original piece by trumpeter Bobby Thorpe, a compostion on September 11th. It was a really accomplished and moving piece; you can hear influences from the age of Baroque to the age of Jazz. They report they’ll have a new CD out soon – I was urging them to see if their new management can get them up on…

My week from hell, day two: My supervisor is out of town all week. My colleague whose job is similar to mine is out of town all week. I back both of them up when they are not in. I work in corporate travel, and there’s an airline strike this week. I am still expected by a service coordinator to somehow take calls. I have been given more latitude by another supervisor, however. I have 1 2 special projects to do this week. I have a hotel group in Vegas this week; last year was a nightmare. I have a…
