Back to the future: how Mastodon is restoring the lost art of online conversation | John Naughton | The Guardian

    January 21, 2023 - By ginny

The Guardian takes notice of Mastodon. The new social network with its interconnected ‘fediverse’ is a welcome alternative to blustering rival Twitter and Elon Musk — Read on www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jan/21/back-to-the-future-how-mastodon-is-restoring-the-lost-art-of-online-conversation

Elon Musk Will Step Down As Twitter CEO (and burn it down by proxy)

    December 20, 2022 - By ginny

My guess is he’ll pick someone guaranteed to offend everyone and to totally ruin the company.

    Harvey Weinstein…Wait, What?

    December 19, 2022 - By ginny

There’s a bizarre detail about Weinstein’s anatomy at the end of this story. It’s a gift link, so you’ll be able to read it. Don’t read it at work or people on Zoom or in the next cube will look up and wonder why you’re gagging at your desk.  A Los Angeles jury on Monday found Harvey Weinstein guilty of rape, forced oral copulation and a third sexual misconduct charge after a weekslong trial. — Read on https://wapo.st/3G7Hz81

In Review: Macally Backlit Portable Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad Mini/Pro, iPhone

    December 18, 2022 - By ginny

This is a review of a review plugin for WordPress.. It’s not a book… but it’s also a review of the wireless keyboard I’m trying to type it on.  A year or more ago, I thought I’d be reading more books, so I enthusiastically read about 3 books and looked for a way to add stars and so on like I’ve seen on other blogs.  The review plugin is called Recensio Book Reviews, and it’s a little too powerful for someone that doesn’t read as many books as she should.  But I’ve read a few lately and so I’ll keep…

Choosing Between Lifeboats: Why Not Both?

    December 17, 2022 - By ginny

Both of them have their strengths and weaknesses as social media platforms - and both thus far are clear of trollish minions. Twitter, though, soon will be flooded with enthusiastic wannabe shitlords acting like huge flocks of soiled budgies flying out of people’s lavatories, infringing on people’s personal freedoms.

The Lord Of The Rings Has Never Been Sexier Than Galadriel’s Temptation Scene In The Rings Of Power

    December 17, 2022 - By ginny

Spoiler alert: ROP is sexy. Someday, maybe, we can all forget about Space Karen and his tantwums, or Biden’s Biggest Loser and his ridiculous copyright-infringing cringe cards. And then we can all get back to the important business of minutely dissecting our favorite fantasy/science fiction shows, scene by scene. There’s a busted-up raftload of people on YouTube who created tons of videos on Rings of Power, some of which are very well produced and informative. I mostly watched without commenting. But recently on Twitter a “Galadriel is actually pretty hot, and so is Halbrand” discussion made it to my feed,…

    My Post-Twitter Post Post

    December 14, 2022 - By ginny

Last week I cleared the waitlist for Post.News and I must say it’s a pleasant place, although it’s still in beta. I also have a Counter.social login, but I don’t like it and don’t like how the anonymous creator of Counter constantly snarks on how bad Post and Mastodon and the other post-Twittter social media sites are.  It’s a different vibe and the culture is still shaking out. EM is doing a great job ruining Twitter as a global resource and it’s probably just a matter of time before he gets bored and gets an incentive to go away, but…

There Goes Salt Lake, Bulldozing My Memories Again. / Post.

    December 14, 2022 - By ginny

The church I attended as a kid is being torn down, the people are now renting space from the Episcopal church down the street. As I’m now Episcopalian, but taking a break from weekly attendance, I’m feeling very off-balance about this.

  • Insurance season is almost over, thank Dog

Avoid health sharing plans, they're not that great a deal. A friend had one while getting some pretty serious treatment, and he struggled to get the care he needed.

Elisabeth Yoder and her son Darragh recently experienced a huge gap in their health care "coverage." They stand in front of the family home, and they belong to a Christian "health sharing" plan that didn't reimburse for a recent ambulance ride.

  • Charm Patch Quilt: On Point

From Sew Can She - this looks like a great way to use up charm squares and scraps that can be at least 4 1/2-5 inches square. The contrast fabric and on-point arrangement add good visual interest without being too busy.

  • Tea Towel Hems

Bought some tea towels for gifts, looking for tutorials for adding colorful hanging cuffs after hemming.

I lean toward Method 1, mitred corners. Will decide once the towels arrive in case the selvage edges are good quality.

  • Sorry About The Mess: Trump Wrecking World Economy

Post: He’s nuts if he thinks manufacturers will move to the US; they like paying rock bottom non-union wages and they’ll pass the higher costs to American consumers. Lose-lose! What can possibly go wrong?

Since he lives in his own bubble universe, I’m wondering how long his big donors, the few relatively sane conservatives in Congress, and his “IKEA cabinet” will hold out until the murmurs behind the scenes become screaming fights in the Oval Office.

Spine of steel? Nope. Skull of rock.

Maury Povich lie detector meme: It says here… Trump is as dumb as a box of rocks.

Global economy rocked again as rates on imports to the US from dozens of trading partners rose further, with China hit by 104% tariffs

  • Now Listening: Joni Mitchell | Black Crow

Joni Mitchell album cover Black Crow. A woman is superimposed over an empty road that leads into her silhouette.

    Text:

”Black Crow - There's a crow flying Black and ragged Tree to tree He's black as the highway that's leading me Now he's diving down To pick up on something shiny I feel like that black crow Flying In a blue sky I took the ferry to the highway Then I drove to a pontoon plane I took a plane to a taxi And a taxi to a train I've been traveling so long How'm I ever gonna know my home When I see it again I'm like a black crow flying In a blue blue sky In search of love and music My whole life has been Illumination Corruption And diving diving diving diving Diving down to pick up on every shiny thing Just like that black crow flying In a blue sky I looked at the morning After being up all night I looked at my haggard face in the bathroom light I looked out the window And I I saw that ragged soul take flight I saw a back crow flying In a blue sky Oh I'm like a black crow flying In a blue sky”
