This is the fundamental thing. Dems might have been going out into the Rustbelt to hold townhall meetings – my senator Dick Durbin is constantly going to local meetings, groundbreakings, and commemorations all over the state. He works hard to connect with people and he does get some PR, some press out of it. But if he were a rabble-rousing Republican, tossing chunks of red meat, now that gets media attention.
