Here’s why I wonder if Republicans think the rest of us are stupid: They line up to howl about issues that they think will get them attention, then quietly slink off and do exactly as they please.

Case in point: the Republican Congressional leadership are all loudly calling for lower gas prices, energy efficiency, and anything that makes them look like they’re doing something about the problem. So they held a press conference recently at a BP gas station in Washington DC, and Speaker of the House Denny Hastert (R-IL) showed up in a hydrogen fueled car. Very nice, very environmentally aware.

Then in this slideshow (only 2 slides, relax) watch what happened when he drove away:

SFGate: Hastert leaves in a hybrid, switches to an SUV

How 4$king CYNICAL is that pair of images??

Meanwhile, not only is my senator pushing a “Healthcare for Hybrids” act, I think he owns one, but I can’t find an article confirming this. Maybe it’s just buried in the bio-chaff. Anyway, you’d never catch him doing anything as cynical as switching cars just for the window-dressing, because he doesn’t have a cynical bone in his body. And he doesn’t think we’re stupid, either.
